| 内容記述 | 英語の語強勢は、分節音と比較すると通時的変化を受けにくいと考えられてきたが、ロマンス起源後の主強勢は語末の韻脚から語頭の韻脚に後退したものである。このような左方への強制移動に対して、現在進行中の後続音節への強制移動は本来の韻脚構造を壊して進行する過程であり、韻律構造に対する強い制約の存在を示している。本稿では、強制移動の過程は韻律構造に係る制約の集合内で生じた順位の変動に帰せられることを論じる。 | |||||

| 内容記述 | It has been believed that English word stress is most resistant to diachronic change . But in reality, most words of Romance origin have retracted their main stress from the word-final foot. While the diachronic leftward shift is a result of replacing the head of the prosodic word, the ongoing shift of word stress to the following syllable can not proceed without destruction of the original foot structures. Such a radical change indicates that a strong constraint on metrical structure requires primary stress be located as close as to the end of the prosodic word. This paper aims at demonstrating that the processes of stress shift are attributed to the constraint reranking within the hierarchy of constraints on metrical structure. | |||||
