The dual task consisted of two tasks, each of which could be carried out as a single task. One was a verbal task (auditory comprehension task) and the other was a visual task (mental rotation task). To examine the efficiency of the dual task developed, eight brain-damaged subjects and 25 neurologically healthy subjects were recruited to participate in this study. The lesions in each brain-damaged participant were located in the right hemisphere; some of them were found in the frontal cortex, and others in the basal ganglia. All participants were instructed to perform three tasks, i.e., the auditory comprehension task and mental rotation task as the single tasks, and the dual task consisting of these two tasks. The participants were also examined by other neuropsychological tests, which are conventionally referred to as divided attention tasks: the symbol digit modalities test (SDMT), part B of the trail making test (TMT-B), the memory updating test, and the paced auditory serial addition test (PASAT). None of the brain-damaged participants showed disturbance in their performance of the single tasks, i.e., the auditory comprehension task and the mental rotation task, compared with the healthy control participants. Three brain-damaged participants, however, showed a significant disturbance in their performance of the dual task compared with control participants. All of them showed significant impairments in their performance of SDMT, TMT-B, the memory updating test, or PASAT. They also showed lesions in the frontal cortex but not in the basal ganglia.
