The National Rehabilitation Hospital, which has 50 beds, was established in 1959 and is the center for rehabilitation medicine in the Republic of the Union of Myanmar. My role as a senior JICA volunteer was to provide occupational therapy to patients and instruct physical therapists about occupational therapy. I treated patients with cerebrovascular accident, cerebral palsy, spinal cord injury or hand injury, and I improved the function of some patients. I conducted some lectures and organized two workshops about Rehabilitation medicine, inviting four speakers (a physician, a physical therapist, an occupational therapist and a speech-language-hearing therapist) from Japan. During my practice in the National Rehabilitation Hospital, several organizations from foreign countries contributed to our work. The International University of Health and Welfare and The Volunteers Group to Send Wheelchairs to Overseas Children in japan donated many medical instruments and assisted in medical stuff development. In the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, concepts and techniques in Rehabilitation medicine have not spread widely and are not practiced rigidly. In addition, no training course is available for occupational therapists.
