From the “Pass Case Examples” published by 37 mental institutions in the Japan Psychiatric Hospitals Association, we randomly selected three facilities that used clinical pathways in acute period wards of psychiatric hospitals and identified 23 subjects in various occupations for this study: doctors, pharmacists, nurses, mental healthcare workers, occupational therapists, nutritionists, psychologists, and office workers. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews with the subjects using a digital voice recorder, which was subsequently transcribed verbatim. The transcribed data was then analyzed using content analysis and quantitative text analysis methods by Krippendorff. Content analysis drew 27 inferences and seven explanatory concepts from the data, whereas the results of the quantitative text analysis revealed that the changes in the chi-square value of the occurrence rate in the explanatory concept group and inference group were significant at the 99% confidence interval. These results indicate that interprofessional discussions are affected by the workload of the healthcare workers and the intentions of the work supervisors and hospital managers. There is therefore a need for hospitals to establish an integrated center in outpatient clinics to further enhance regional collaboration, while nurses have to work with both parties in order to facilitate smooth interactions between interprofessional healthcare workers and patients.
