Pediatricians, public health nurses, and psychologists visit all the municipal as well as nursery schools and kindergartens by turn. This kind of health checkup rarely takes place in other cities in Japan. The aim of this research is to examine the significance and characteristics of this health checkup system by reviewing various opinions of teachers at nursery schools and kindergartens. [Approach]  Questionnaires were sent out to teachers at 16 preschools (10 nursery schools and 6 kindergartens) . Besides, the teachers were interviewed also. Obtained information by the questionnaires and interview was to be investigated.\n[Results and Discussion]  Between the period of 2004 and 2015, 20-35% of 5-year-old children in the city after the health checkup were finally classified as “Follow-up,” “Referral” or “In-consultation” according the protocol of Otawara city office. According to the results of questionnaires and details of  interview,  what turned out to be evident was that the health checkup system could (1) provide deeper insights into developmental disorders by understanding different aspects of physical and mental development of each child, (2) make a change in teaching methods, such as a way of providing individual supports and preparing structured teaching, visual stimulations, relieving some unpleasant sensations felt by some children with developmental disorder and eliciting successful experiences in their daily life, and (3) create cooperative relationships between parents and preschools in the course of childcare in spite of those parents with children diagnosed as having developmental disorders often express their anxieties to teachers. This kind of investigation has not been described in any of research reports in Japan.
