In the present study, a questionnaire survey involving 302 people was conducted and 206 responded to it (response rate: 68.2%). Information on the residences of 131 college students living alone was collected, and environmental measurement was conducted in those of four college students (three single apartment rooms and one house) living alone. As the results of indoor environment measurement, the indoor temperature, humidity, CO2, and illuminance levels of some rooms were above or below the standards, presumably due to the marked airtightness of the rooms. Although ventilation of the rooms decreased the CO2 levels, the suspended particle matter levels increased. The effects of different ventilation methods were compared, and ventilation by solely opening the windows was not effective. The results of the questionnaire survey suggested that many respondents did not ventilate their rooms adequately. Appropriate methods and time for conducting ventilation as well as its frequency should be presented. Although the noise levels measured in the rooms were below the standard, many respondents complained that their neighbors often made a noise that interfered with their regular habits in life. It is necessary for them to share required information, including the types of sound that annoy most people and period of time in which they do not want to be disrupted, with their neighbors to develop methods for improvement.
