A literature search of articles published in Igaku Chuo Zasshi (ICHUSHI) (ver. 5) between 1983 and 2012 using key words such as “percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy” and “the elderly” extracted 899 articles. Review of the 899 articles revealed that the number of studies on percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy in elderly patients increased by more than 13-fold during the period 1995-2012. In addition, review by theme revealed that while many studies investigated the “utility” or “methods” of the procedure in the early years, after 2005 there was a rapid increase in the number of studies on “ethical issues”, “quality of life (QOL)”, and “dementia”. With regard to QOL and dementia, not only the number, but also the contents of the studies changed over time.
