The Japanese Association of Occupational Therapists published a collection of 583 case reports, from which 132 involved acute care recovery of physical disability. Only 19 out of these cases involved interventions of less than a month, with long-term care being more prevalent. The reports of these 19 cases revealed that the basic aims were functional improvement, early ambulation, and enhancing activities of daily living (ADL) through interventions involving sitting exercise, giving guidance to the patient and family, and ADL training in conjunction with other personnel. The results led not only to standard acute care occupational therapy improvements in upper limb function and balance, daily tasks, and transfers, but also to assessments and interventions to explore what each patient could and could not do to deal with the practicalities of being in an acute care setting.
