The following investigations and analyses were conducted: <1> evaluation of the management of maternal patients transported by ambulance whose babies were expected to be admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and GCU, <2> evaluation of the current status of NICU/GCU patients and the acquisition of general perinatal patient specific intensive care unit hospitalization fees and newborn patient GCU hospitalization fees, and <3> formulation of measures to improve the bed occupancy rate in the GCU and maintain its high profitability based on evaluation of the underlying factors. These investigations and analyses were conducted based on collected datasets concerning the hospitalization of newborn patients, the financial records of the hospital (income and expenditures), etc. The results of our investigations and analyses suggest that the hospital should institute a policy in which newborn patients of mothers who were transported by ambulance should be transferred to other hospitals when they are no longer in the acute stage in order to ensure that obstetric beds are always available. Most of the patients in the NICU were those for whom additional points could be charged, while many patients in the GCU were those for whom the period during which additional points could be charged had expired. Specifically, it is necessary to optimize bed control by transferring patients from the NICU to the GCU taking into account the point calculation period and to provide appropriate care to patients taking into consideration their entire clinical course from the early stages of hospitalization to discharge from the hospital.
