The therapy focused on dysfunctional aspects of the client's life and failure to use his competence effectively. The memory training was intended to catalyze behavioral use of competence. Sessions were structured and memory training was carried out using the link and peg systems for about 25 minutes every week. This training led to enhancement of the client's competence; imagination, creativity, concentrating attention, flexibility in cognitive style, volition, will, desire, challenge and self–confidence (sense of competence and sense of efficacy), and directed him to change his lifestyle. After seventeen sessions he could articulate his own goals. The memory therapy studied here was very effective in activating a hikikomori client's competence.}, pages = {77--84}, title = {Memory therapy with a hikikomori client}, volume = {18}, year = {2013} }
