We analyzed the changes observed in these subjects over a period of approximately 3 years. The subjects were 5 people 80 years of age or older who were selected from among 50 residents of a nursing home. The day care center was located in the same building as the nursing home. Our analysis showed that the 5 subjects established peer support relationships with the people who visited the day care center, even though they experienced some confusion. They also established good relationships with the staff of the day care center, with both parties showing respect for the other despite the differences in their social positions. The subjects realized that they were able to help other people, which gave them a reason for living and improved their quality of life.The findings of this study show that focusing on the potential of elderly people and providing them with a place where they can be active and interact with (and support) other people can revitalize the lives of nursing home residents and help them regain and maintain their independence.These findings may also be applicable to apartment complexes for the elderly with various types of support services as well as inexpensive nursing homes.
