However, the CRS use percentage is significantly lower than the seat belt use percentage. In the present study, which was conducted in August and September of 2010, we investigated the relationship between how well informed mothers are about CRSs and whether the CRSs are actually used. The subjects were 97 mothers with 9-month-old infants. It was found that there was an association between knowledge about the effectiveness of CRSs and their actual use for the following item: \"There is no significant difference in death rates of children in car accidents between when CRSs are used and when they are not used.\" (Cramer's V: 0.351). It was also found that there was an association between the awareness of the importance of the use of CRSs and their actual use for the following two items: \"It does not matter if a CRS is not used for short drives such as local shopping trips.\" (Cramer's V: 0.399) and \"If the people around you do not use CRSs, you also feel that there is no need to use a CRS.\" (Cramer's V: 0.357). These results suggest that many mothers do not have adequate knowledge concerning the effectiveness of CRSs and are not sufficiently aware of the importance of their use. They therefore tend to interpret information related to CRSs as is convenient to themselves and use (or do not use) CRSs accordingly. An effective method of providing mothers and their family members with correct knowledge about the effectiveness of CRSs and making them aware of the importance of using CRSs could be through midwives, who have close contact with mothers from the pregnancy phase.
