The questionnaire was mailed to all members of the Japan Association of Expert Advisors for the Provision of Assistive Products, and the responses revealed 134 accidents/near accidents, the most common being those involving beds and their attachments. In particular, a significant number (43 cases: 32.1%)involved bed rails, including "climbing over the rails and falling" (19 cases: 14.2%) and "becoming caught in the rails" (18 cases: 13.4%) To our knowledge, there have been no other studies concerning accidents/near accidents involving assistive products focusing exclusively on elderly persons with dementia. As evidenced by reported cases of "climbing over the rails and falling," bed rails, which are intended to prevent accidental falls, can inhibit the movement of elderly persons with dementia, potentially resulting in accidents. On the other hand, the families of elderly persons with dementia often ask for assistive products that provide physical restraint, such as beds with rails.The results of the present study suggest that expert advisors who are responsible for providing assistive products should carefully consider the use of bed rails from the viewpoint of risk management for elderly persons with dementia. At the same time, the government and manufacturers of assistive products should issue warnings to consumers concerning the potential risk of users climbing over the bed rails.}, pages = {29--40}, title = {福祉用具専門相談員から見た,在宅の認知症高齢者の福祉用具利用状況とリスクマネジメントのあり方}, volume = {14}, year = {2010} }
