A semi-structured interview and participant observation on 16 residents revealed that when faced with difficulties in interpersonal relationships, the residents attempt to the following: <maintain distance>, <avoid>, or <argue against> \"in their own way,\" while using the life support staff as a buffer to maintain their relationships. The residents also participated in gatherings hosted by the elderly home to deepen their mutual understanding. The gathering functioned as a place for mutual <sharing of happiness> and <approval> with the help of the staff's thoughtful consideration. The residents found a place of their own by attempting to maintain an amicable relationship.
