The target number of patients per proton therapy room was estimated using the net present value method and published data. Based on these numbers, the number of required irradiation rooms in proton therapy facilities in each region was estimated, and the excess or deficiency of irradiation rooms was examined.<br />Results: Nationwide, the number of irradiation rooms was 29.2 higher than the estimated number of required rooms. The number of proton therapy rooms in Koshinetsu, Chugoku, Shikoku, and Okinawa was 0.1­0.8 lower than the estimated\nnumber of rooms required.<br />Conclusion: This study showed that no room is currently available to establish proton therapy rooms.
