Magnetic resonance imaging technique was used to determine the ACSA of quadriceps muscle in nomal subjects. Twenty healthy university students volunteered for the present study. After informed consent was gained, the right thigh of subjects was imaged in supine position with the hip and knee held in full extension. The muscle investigated were rectus femoris(RF), vastus medialis(VM), vastus laterals(VL) and vastus intermidius(VI). The boundaries of each muscle were digitized from images taken at 1 cm intervals. The ACSA was determined by NIH image, and the muscle volume was calculated by summing the ACSA of each image between the most proximal and distal images in which the muscle was visible. Isokinetic muscle torque were measured by Hydromusculator GT500. The mean ACSA of the quadriceps was 43.1±12.7cm^2 , and these of each muscle were 8.0±3.6cm^2, 18.1±5.3cm^2, 19.8±6.4 and 13.4±4.3cm^2 for the RF, VM, VL and VI. The mean volume of the quadriceps was 1054±353cm^3, and these of each muscle were 150±65cm^3, 253±96cm^3; and 228±85cm^3 for the RF, VM, VL and VI. The maximum ACSA of quadriceps femoris was closely correlated with the muscle volume of that muscle. The isokinetic extension torque was correlated with the ACSA and the muscle volume.
