Neuropeptides, which have a close relation with stress, are known to act in the brain as neurotransmitters or neuromodulators to regulate gastrointestinal functions.Thyrotropin-releasing hormone injected in the brain increases hepatic blood flow, stimulates hepatic proliferation and protects against experimental acute liver injury, through vagal pathway. On the other hand, central administration of corticotropin-releasing factor decreases hepatic blood flow and aggravates experimental acute liver injury, through the sympathetic nervous system.
