However, children with developmental coordination disorders often have difficulty with ball-handling, and the search for intervention methods is therefore ongoing. The developmental stages of rubber-ball-catching motions have been analyzed previously, but no reports of analysis of the catching motion in softball have been found. The aim of the present study was to classify the softball-catching motions, and to analyze and elucidate the differences between people who did and did not have previous experience of softball. The study was carried out with 52 healthy adults, and the softball-catching motions were analyzed on the basis of division into the following three stages: preparation stage, catching stage, and escape response. The result was that 23 motion categories were established. In addition, significant differences at the 5% level were found with respect to items such as upper limb positioning, glove orientation, movement of the body, presence or absence of grip, and tension in the non-catching hand, depending on whether or not the individual had previous experience with softball. The softball-inexperienced group showed excessive movement of the body, and the non-catching hand was tense. This excessive tension is probably a case of associated movement (AM), involving overflow of tension from the catching hand, and AMs tend to occur when people make movements with which they have little experience.
