Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 19 nursing students belonging university and junior college in nursing who had completed the clinical practice part of pediatric nursing course. The interview data were analyzed descriptively and qualitatively. In terms of the studentsʼ self-insight related to establishing helping relationships with children, the following seven categories were identified: “searching for relationships with the children”, “worries over establishing relationships with the children”, “awareness of how to communicate with the children”, “recognition of a nursing assessment peculiar to pediatric nursing”, “awareness of lack of interaction with children”, “positive attitude likely to solve the problem of unconfident care for children”, and “interest in nursing care for children by standing close beside them”. It was discussed that self-insight helps the students adjust their attitudes toward the children, when nursing students try to establish the relationships with the children.
