First, a factor analysis was performed to explore the causes of loneliness and their associations with other factors. Three latent variables were extracted, of which delayed release times were associated with only one: the absence of relations that can be holding. Next, residents were interviewed to better understand the social rehabilitation process and its driving factors. While deep self-repudiation characterized the subjects’ mindsets early in their residence, they were able to redefine themselves through a continuous, self-reinforcing cycle of traveling between the halfway house, which served as a safe space and pseudo-familial fulcrum, and broader society (e.g., employers). Continual progress and success in redefining the self effectively allowed residents to attribute their loneliness less and less to extrinsic factors, and gave them the capacity to deal with their surroundings and emotions on their own.
