<dc:description>Purpose: To describe how nurses engaged in the COVID-19 ward maintain their intention to work under harsh conditions.
Methods: A qualitative descriptive study was performed using Kinoshitaʼs modified grounded theory approach (M-GTA).
Results: The intention to continue to work among nurses in COVID-19 wards consisted of 20 concepts and the following six categories: [confronting themselves as nurses continuing to work (the core category)], [a sense of responsibility in choosing nursing as a profession of their own volition for various reasons], [a sense of mission and determination with no room for distractions], [harsh experiences in both mind and body], [indignation as nurses at chaotic society] and [human environment and coping as the foundation for overcoming difficulties]. Although the situation was harsh at the beginning of the response to COVID-19, the subjects were able to strengthen their identity-centered intention to continue to work while choosing [confronting themselves as nurses continuing to work] by themselves. Also revealed was the importance of human support from bosses and colleagues in the workplace and family members to overcome difficulties.
Conclusions: The subjects constantly confronted themselves, strengthened their identity-centered intention to continue to work, and overcame the difficulties in responding to COVID-19.</dc:description>
